Authorities in Southern California are grappling with a surge of disruptive behavior by teenagers on electric bikes and motorcycles, particularly in Lake Forest, where the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has reported multiple incidents of vandalism and assault involving airsoft guns.

“Attention parents, we need your help,” read a social media message from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Lake Forest office on Thursday. “We are all about having fun this summer, but when the fun starts to endanger life and property, that’s where we need to step in.”

The Foothill Ranch Towne Centre has become a hotspot for these disturbances, where teens have been recklessly riding electric motorcycles and e-bikes, vandalizing property, and using airsoft guns to assault customers and businesses. In response, deputies have increased patrols and recently seized two electric motorcycles, as shown in a photo shared on Instagram.

The sheriff’s department emphasized the legal restrictions on these vehicles: “E-motorcycles such as Sur-ron, Talaria, 79 Bike, RAWR Mantis, Stark, etc., are for off-highway use only and are not street legal. Any criminal behavior will be investigated as such, and we will continue to address unsafe e-motorcycle and e-bike concerns through education and enforcement.”

The spike in incidents involving teens on electric bikes has not been limited to Lake Forest. Nearby Huntington Beach has also seen an increase in complaints and injuries, prompting the city to implement new restrictions on their use. These measures were introduced following reports of reckless behavior and collisions, which have endangered both riders and pedestrians.

Further north, the situation has been equally alarming. A group of at least a dozen e-bike riders created chaos at the Hermosa Beach Pier by launching illegal fireworks into a crowd of nighttime revelers. The unexpected assault left visitors scrambling for safety and underscored the growing problem of e-bike-related disturbances across the region.

Local authorities are urging parents to monitor their children’s activities more closely and educate them about the legal and safety implications of using e-bikes and electric motorcycles. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, is committed to tackling this issue through a combination of increased patrols, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of existing regulations.

As summer progresses, communities across Southern California are hoping for a decline in these dangerous behaviors, ensuring that fun and safety can coexist.
