China has recently intensified military exercises around Taiwan

China has recently intensified military exercises around Taiwan, escalating tensions in the region. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command has launched a significant campaign, showcasing advanced weaponry such as the J-20 stealth fighter and the DF-16A missile. These drills, termed "Cross-Straits Lethality," included encircling Taiwan with warplanes and naval vessels, signaling China's readiness to address the Taiwan issue by force if necessary.

The exercises, which began on May 23, 2024, were announced as a "punishment" for Taiwan's perceived separatist actions and a warning to external forces, particularly the United States, against interference. The drills encompass joint sea-air combat-readiness patrols, battlefield control, and precision strikes, involving multiple branches of the armed forces including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. This series of maneuvers highlights China's preparation and capability to conduct operations in and around Taiwan and its outer islands, such as Kinmen and Matsu.

These military activities are part of China's broader strategy to demonstrate its military prowess and resolve concerning Taiwan. The exercises have prompted strong reactions from Taiwan, which has condemned the drills as provocative actions undermining regional peace and stability. Taiwan's Ministry of Defense has mobilized its own surveillance and defensive systems to monitor and respond to the situation.

China's persistent military pressure on Taiwan is a significant element of its approach to reunification, reflecting its strategic shift and the increasing military capabilities developed over the past decades  (Radio Free Asia)  (Taiwan News) .
