American military weapons finding their way into Mexico, where they’re landing in the hands of the Mexican cartels

American military weapons, including machine guns, have been increasingly finding their way into Mexico, exacerbating violence and empowering drug cartels. The flow of these weapons is facilitated by various means, including smuggling across the porous U.S.-Mexico border. The Mexican government has raised concerns and called for investigations into the origin and trafficking routes of these military-grade arms  (Military Benefits)  (EL PAÍS English) .

The U.S. and Mexico have been discussing measures to curb this issue, such as imposing sanctions on companies involved in transporting these weapons and enhancing border security to prevent illegal arms trafficking  (Military Benefits) . The problem is deeply rooted, with U.S. weapons, often originally intended for civilian use, being modified or directly trafficked to criminal organizations in Mexico, outgunning local law enforcement and contributing to the ongoing violence and instability in the region  (EL PAÍS English) .
