10 Tips To Follow After A Flood Damage

From the major flooding in Houston to other areas throughout the U.S., many people have dealt with the effects of flooding this spring.  Much of the recent flooding has been the result of heavy rain and when this occurs, it can be difficult to protect your home or property from significant flood damage.  The damage caused by a major flood can be overwhelming and many homeowners with flooded homes do not know where to start with the flood cleanup effort.  These tips will help you take the right actions in the aftermath of a flood to stay safe and protect your property.

1. File a Damage Claim ASAP: Like with any other major property damage, it is important to alert your insurance company immediately. A
   representative of your insurance provider will evaluate the damage to your home and let you know what type of coverage you can get based on their evaluation.  Some homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flood damage so make sure to review your policy and consider flood insurance to keep your home protected.
2. Save Receipts from All Expenditures: Make sure that you save every receipt for any expenses related to the flood damage such as repairs, insurance, and other purchases. Keeping a good record of your receipts and expenditures will help the claims process go much more smoothly.
3. Document all Flood Damage: Before having your home or property restored, you must document all the damage by taking photos. This will eliminate any possible disputes between you and your insurance company over what was damaged and which repairs have been done.
4. Call a Flood Cleanup Professional: Flood cleanup is an emergency business because ignoring the excess water can lead to even more severe damage in your home or building, so make sure to contact a flood damage restoration professional as soon as possible. A reliable water damage restoration professional will assess the damage and provide you with an estimate as well as their remediation plan.
5. Get a Tetanus Shot if Necessary: Flood water can potentially contain sewage and other harmful microorganisms mixed in that can cause infection or disease from exposure. If you or someone in your family has been exposed to flood water, it is wise to get a tetanus shot.  In the event of a large scale flood, tetanus shots may be offered free of charge in your area.
6. Keep Children Out of the Water: Your kids may be tempted to swim in the floodwater but this is very dangerous because of the variety of harmful materials the water may contain. Make sure your kids understand that they need to stay out of the water.
7. Wait to Start your Car: If your car has been affected by the flood, wait until it has been inspected by a mechanic before trying to start it. Take note of the highest level the water reached in your car and don’t forget to call your car insurance provider.
   
8. Inspect your Home for Structural Damage: Inspect the structural elements of your home for damage and if the electric, gas, water, or sewer lines have been compromised, alert the right authorities and stay out of your home until it has been declared safe to enter.
9. Remove Moveable Wet Items: Any items that are moveable and quickly soak water such as bedding, clothing, furniture, and non-permanent carpeting should be removed immediately to help prevent mold growth.
10. Watch for Animals: Severe flooding can disrupt the natural environment and cause animals to move around looking for higher ground. You should be alert and watch out for any animals entering your home or property.
